Sophie’s High School Works

During my time in the upper school at King School in Stamford, CT, I was one of 12 students in the advanced art program from my freshman year to my senior year.

One of my favorite parts of this program, aside from meeting my best friends, was the senior year art colloquium.

Throughout our senior year, we chose a theme that would determine our work for the rest of the year.

MY THEME:

“My work strives to find the common ground between art and nature. Combining both beautiful colors and patterns into simplistic designs that can be showcased in a working environment”

Parsons School of Design - Summer 2019

After my Sophomore year at King, I was accepted into a summer program at Parsons School of Design in New York City. During the three-week intensive program, I worked on three main projects including an article of clothing made from non-traditional materials, a creative take on a color wheel, and our final project of our choosing. This was an incredible experience where I was surrounded by new people and communicating each day in New York City as a 16-year-old.

To the left, I am wearing the dress I made during this course out of plastic tablecloths and fishing lines. I wanted to create shapes and texture while also ensuring the material would be easy to work with. Before this project, I had experience with sewing by hand and with a machine, but this was my first time creating a garment. I am very pleased with how the dress came out and the photos that came from the shoot. I aimed to use dull or gray backgrounds to enhance the colors and unique nature of the dress.

Color Theory Wheel

The second project we worked on was a color wheel assignment where we were tasked with creating an unconventional color wheel. For this assignment I decided to combine all three color wheels on one piece and drew inspiration from Andy Warhol’s Campbell soup can art. The piece is one of my favorites to this day - but the little details in the letters and design of can be difficult to paint within the confines of the color sections. This piece sparked my inspiration for another piece I did for my family which you can find below as well.

Final Project

For the last project, I found myself with a little creative block, I tried many different sketches before I decided to dedicate myself to clean crisp lines and a simpler design. While the graphics themselves are simple - I found the simplicity to be comforting and allowed me to experiment with acrylic paint and attention to detail.
